About a month ago I met a guy in Dundee who was wearing a baseball cap with a glider patch.
I visited with him awhile; he seemed real pleasant.
I gave him a coin and I got his email address; I sent him a message later.
maybe he'll show up tommorrow. (21 Sept 2025)
About a week ago I was at the Mitchell Exhibit in the Milwaukee airport and stopped at the USO next door.
I met a really nice young man who was on his way to basic training. Naturally I encouraged him to go airborne.
He wasn't familiar with challenge coins; there were a small collection of them on the wall in the USO.
I explained a little, and told him "you might collect a few during your time in the military. Let me give you the 1st one for youir collection" . . .
Today i visited the Kelch Aviation museum in Brodhead WI.
A fellow approached me saying he was in a ranger battalion.
He seemed legit. I whipped out my challenge coin and asked if he had one.
He seemed a bit sheepish and said "next time I see you I'll buy you a beer."
I gave him a coin. And I wrote my email on his flyer.
I hope to hear from him.
Each time, I put another $10 in the deposit bag.
Next week, I'm going to be in Dallas on business.
Maybe I'll try to contact some members of the alumni association in the Dallas area. Maybe we'll have a beer. You can't be too sure about these things.
If i give away a challenge coin, I should come back with one of theirs.
Or at least I'll find out if other chapters have them.

membership update Roger Lee Coon

While working on the membership list, I ran across Roger Lee Coon.

Roger was born in 15 January 1952, passed away 14 February 2022.

His extremely brief obituary only mentioned "He honorably served in the United States Army"

The picture that accompanied the obituary shows him as a young paratrooper, in class As with airborne wings and fourragere.

He apparently lived a full life, and his picture showed him as a young paratrooper.

A fitting tribute; we all want to be remembered when we were sharp young paratroopers.

May God, St Michael, and the great jumpmaster in the sky keep an eye on him.

Membership update Michael Sullivan

A few days ago we got a quick email from Michael Sullivan.
He mentioned his computer was hacked or crashed or something, and he has a different email address. He said he has also had some health issues.
But he is a cheerful paratrooper, living in Crown Point Indiana.
Here's his story, briefly, in his words:

"I have been sick , had my computer crash, amongst other older life maladies.

I don’t think I’ll be making many Chicago trips these days, but would like to get the Chapter news.

I took basic at Ft. Lewis Wa. in 1971 anyone climbing, flying, or had a MOS guarantee went there.

I took MOS at Ft. Mother Rucker for aircraft mechanic and door gunner school.

I was 1st place in door gunner school , which resulted in me being assigned to the world’s largest Chinook unit in Viet Nam.

I was in the last full combat brigade in Viet Nam, 229th Assault Support Helicopter Bn.. 1st Cav. 3rd Brigade my unit had 25 Hooks and was commanded by Maj. Carle E. Dunn.

Returning stateside I went to Ft. Bragg with A Co. 82nd Aviation Bde.

I was a UH-1H crew chief in the 1st Flt. Platoon. I made trooper of the month with much help from the 1st Flt. platoon.

I re-enlisted and went to Ft. Knox with the 235th attack Helicopter co. I was medically discharged in Aug. of 1974 with PTSD, survivor guilt and "concussions and contusions" of the head.

Currently I am in some good health. . . [some medical info redacted] . . . [he has some medical challenges] . . ., All agent Orange related. I get 100 % disability, which I am most grateful for.

I'm going to be 74 in the fall, and have a 3 and 1/2 year old grand daughter that I watch 3 to 4 days a week.

I feel blessed that I'm still alive to enjoy her. I still feel 18 and remember all the pains, sorrows, and Brotherhood that made serving our country one of the most important and endearing facets of my life."

Membership update Sergio A DeFrancisco

When I was working on the member list, I ran across this paratrooper's name; our website had recognized his email wasn't working so stopped sending emails.
I tried the phone number and it was disconnected.
Next step; google his name and hometown.
Sadly, there was a very brief obituary.
He passed away 8 June 2017.
He is the care of God and St Michael and the great jumpmaster in the sky.

Membership update Richard L Dean

As many of you know, I've been working on the membership list in my spare time. When i got to Richard Dean, there wasn't much hope. . . no address, no email address, no mention of any contact really.
But, there was a phone number and I called and left a msg.
Didn't expect to hear back.
A couple hours later I got this call our of the blue from a cheerful-sounding old paratrooper!
It seems Richard L. Dean joined the Army immediately after 9/11 and served for 12 years. He was in the 82nd and suffered a back injury that caused him to be medically discharged. But he's still kicking.
He lives in NC and wants to continue to be a part of the Chicago Chapter even if he can't make it here often, or at all.
It makes me feel old to think he joined after 9/11 and could have served 20 and been retired a few years ago.
I was about a month or two from retiring when the whole world-trade-center thing happened.

Well, I guess it's not an official chapter event, but we could plan one in future.
It doesn't take a lot of planning.
Rene and I spent an hour or two practicing with our 12-guage shotguns.

The venue is easy to get to, friendly, and pretty much trouble free.
You walk in, they give you a lanyard and say "have fun" . . .
The lanyard is used to activate the machines that toss the clay pigeons.
When you finish they put the lanyard in the computer and they charge you so much per throw.
We visited 6 or 7 stations, each of which were semi-shaded, and we had a nice breeze, which was really welcome as it is just a bit warm out today.

Monday and Tuesday this week - visit to Ft Benning

It's almost impossible for me to describe how it made me feel when that young soldier at the gate said "Welcome home, sir!"

it's been 46 years (august 1979) since I earned my basic parachutist badge at Ft Benning and I've always wented to go back, just to see the 250-ft tower.
I've seen pictures but it's just not the same.
Monday afternoon I made it back; the big towers look just the way I remember them.
The 34-foot towers too - they look just like I remember them.
The covered training areas where we learned to do PLFs. . . the same except there are a couple C-130s with the wings removed - I'm pretty sure we used a wooden frame to simulate the door and it looks like they have real air frames for that now.

I wandered around a while, and exchanged pleasantries with a few other old paratroopers that were doing the same thing.

One guy had his wife and a couple kids with him - they were taking a picture in front of the C 130 there. They were all cheerful, acting like they enjoyed being there and asking their dad about jumping and stuff. I was happy for him.

Another fellow had his wife and one teenager with him.
WHen he tried to talk to the teenager about the Army the young man acted very indifferent, even dismissive.
The veteran was stoic but clearly wished the younger man was a bit less dismissive.

A younger guy - apparently on active duty - was walking on the sidewalk speaking loudly to someone on a cell phone - clearly upset about something. In passing I said "how are you doing" or something.
He sayd "Great - my wife just cleaned out my bank account".
I said "I hope you get that sorted out, soldier". . . I didn't know what to say.

The Airborne Walk is awesome.
I have a lot of pictures; I promise I am going to learn how to post pictures on our website.

Challenge coins are ordered

We sent out the check for the challenge coins today.

The expected delivery they gave me yesterday looks like a few days after our June meeting; I was hoping to get them in time for that but it's an estimated date so we still might have them in time for June.

Our new challenge coins are 1/4 inch larger than the old ones.

Memorial Day Parade

We had a nice turnout for the Memorial Day Parade in Naperville.
The weather was perfect, the crowd was enthusiastic, and the group looked great!
Mario made the whole parade route with the chapter's T-10 parachute.
I am sure the paradegoers have NO idea just how hard that is.

Starting today, the webstore is a fundraiser for our group; each purchase has a 15% "Chapter tax" added - that money will come back to us.

The vendor we are working with is a local Rockford business called Embroid This.

A few updates regarding our chapter meetings

Want to share a couple of updates regarding our monthly chapter meetings.

Based on feedback we received from participants last year and recently, we've decided to stop hosting dual in-person and online meetings. Overall, the feedback was that the experience for those participating online wasn't great -- hard to hear, cannot see the room, and such.

Because of this, our Board has decided to alternate in-person and online meetings each month. This month (Feb), we'll meet online via Google Meet, as we did during the pandemic. Then in March we'll meet in person. And so on. We also are going to plan socials during the online meeting months for those interested to meet up for a beer, soda, or whatever you like. Look for more info on that shortly.

Another item to share is that we are moving away from hosting chapter meetings at Rock Bottom in Warrenville. Recently we told by the brewery that they are going to start requiring contracts, room fees, and minimum headcounts for our regular meetings -- and we cannot support that change, it's just too cost-prohibitive.

Following a busy Holiday/New Years and with a few new board members joining, we need some extra time to get things organized and moving forward. As such, we're going to cancel our normal January meeting, which would have been held Sunday, 08 January.

Our first meeting of 2023 will be held Sunday, 05 February at Rock Bottom Warrenville and will be in-person only. We're moving up a week due to a conflict in February with the Super Bowl that's scheduled for Sunday, 12 Feb.

Our 2023 Chicago Chapter Executive Board was installed, per our chapter By Laws, at the chapter holiday party on 11 December 2022 at Rock Bottom Warrenville. The installing officer was former chapter Chairman Don Strazer.

On 15 October 2022, the Chicago Chapter participated in a golf outing fund raiser at Boulder Ridge Country Club in Lake In The Hills, IL, that was the brainchild of our member Thomas Milone.

While chapter participation was modest, the Boulder Ridge members who participated were extremely generous and the event was absolutely terrific. Many thanks to Tom for his hard work and dedication to this project!

Because of the success of the event, the Chicago Chapter was able to make a $3,280 donation to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton. In the photo below, Tom Milone and I present the donation to Tom Heneghan, MSHV's Major Gifts Officer, at their office on 28 Oct.

The plan is to make this an annual event and hopefully bigger each year. We'll share info regarding the 2023 event early in the year. Likely the next event will move up to late Spring or early Summer.

Chicago Bears Breakfast for Vietnam Vets/Era Vets

The Chicago Bears are hosting a special recognition breakfast at Halas Hall in Lake Forest, IL, for Vietnam Veterans and Vietnam Era Veterans of all U.S. military services who served between Nov 1955 and May 1975. The Chicago Bears organization wants to recognize our nation's veterans who did not receive the support and gratitude they deserved during their time in service. Only these veterans are invited to this event.

SECDEF Recognizes Units in Afghanistan Withdrawl

Units involved in the withdrawal from Afghanistan will be recognized for their service, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced.

“At President Biden’s direction, all units involved in the retrograde operation from Afghanistan, Operation Allies Refuge and Operation Allies Welcome will be awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation or its equivalent,” Austin said in a statement released Aug. 31.

The 82^nd Airborne Division Association Education Fund has the unique opportunity this year to provide a number of scholarships to Spouses and Children of 82^nd Airborne Division Veterans who have a service related rating with the Veterans Administration.

If you are interested contact the 82^nd Airborne Division Association Education Fund at: scholarshipsDVF@82ftff.org or call (910) 223-1182 to obtain an application. We are aiming to distribute Scholarships in June 2022 so don’t wait. We will begin accepting applications immediately.

It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of Becky Granat, wife of our chapter's Vice Chairman, Glenn Granat. Becky was 63.

Visitation will take place this Sunday, 29 August 2021, from 15:00-19:30 at Schmaedeke Funeral Home, 10701 S. Harlem Avenue, Worth, IL 60482. A funeral service to immediately follow at 19:30.

Stan is turning 99!

Chicago Chapter member Stan Gryga is celebrating his 99th birthday this Saturday, 23 August. Stan is a WWII veteran who participated in all ETO campaigns from "Casablanca to Berlin" and had been a very active member of our chapter until the pandemic hit.

Stan currently resides at Ascension Living Resurrection Village in Chicago. While we celebrated with Stan in person last year, current conditions in Chicago have again restricted in-person visits. Because of this, I'm asking our Chicago Chapter to help celebrate this year by sending a card or letter to recognize his birthday. I know that he will greatly appreciate all the recognition.

Chase ETS'd in December 2020 from B/1-319th AFAR (82nd Airborne Division) at Fort Bragg, NC. He earned the rank of Sergeant and served as a 13B. Chase is a veteran of Operation Freedom's Sentinel in Afghanistan.

Chase lives in Lake In The Hills, IL. He is planning to start his education at McHenry Community College and then study Aeronautical Engineering at University of Illinois. And he will continue to serve his country in the IL National Guard.

2021 Officer Nominations Now Closed

Nominations for our 2021 Executive Board officially closed yesterday, 25 Oct, as communicated. We appreciate everyone who participated in the process, and will now move to verify each nomination to ensure that the nominee accepts the nomination.

Once everything is verified, we'll begin the election process at our November meeting on 08 Nov. Elections will be held online via our chapter website, and then the 2021 board will be installed at our December meeting, likely also held online.

Chicago Chapter:

It's time to start the process for electing our chapter's Executive Board for 2021. Per our By Laws, we hold nominations in October, elections in November, and then install the new board after that (we've been doing this at our Holiday Party in December).

Here, we'd like to ask for your nominations for board positions, consisting of the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer -- see below for descriptions. You may nominate yourself or another Chicago Chapter member for any position. The current board will verify that each nominee accepts the nomination. We then will form up the ballot and distribute them in November for voting.

This is the first time we've solicited nominations online, so please contribute to show your support. Only Chicago Chapter members may participate. You must be logged in to the chapter website to participate. If you have any questions, email info@chicagoairborne.com.

Please submit your nominations by Sunday, 25 October 2020.

Descriptions of Board Positions:
(verbatim from our Chicago Chapter By-Laws):

Chairman: The Chairman shall, in general, supervise and control all of the business and affairs of the Chapter and shall also preside and maintain order at all meetings. He shall also be Chairman of the Executive Committee. He shall represent the Chapter as Delegate to the National Convention. In the event he is unable to do so, a Delegate shall be elected from the Chapter membership.

Current Incumbent: Mark Mueller

Vice Chairman: The Vice Chairman shall perform all duties of the Chairman in the absence, death or disability of the Chairman. Especially should be interest himself in the membership of the Chapter, in developing Chapter activities and in the entertainment features of all meetings.

Current Incumbent: Glenn Granat

Secretary: The Secretary shall give written notice of meetings to all members no less than one (1) week prior to scheduled meeting date. He shall also keep such minutes and records as are necessary, and , in general, perform all duties incidental to the office and such other duties as may be assigned to him by the Chairman. He shall have a copy of these By-Laws at each meeting.

Current Incumbent: Mark Mueller

Treasurer: The Treasurer shall collect all dues and assessments, keep financial records of the Chapter in ledger form, showing receipts and disbursements. On approval of the Executive Committee he shall make proper disbursements. He shall be required to submit a monthly written report to the Chapter and a written annual report at the end of the fiscal year. Such reports are to be made available to any member upon his request, provided that a proper and reasonable period is allowed to produce other current reports.

Assn Scholarship Applications Due By 15 October

A friendly reminder that applications for 82nd Airborne Division Association college scholarships are due by 15 Oct. Scholarships are granted annually by the 82nd Airborne Division Education Fund and made to all eligible applicants.

Eligible are former troopers within two years of separation and dependents of Assn Life members seeking a Bachelors degree at an accredited college or university.

On 23 Aug, a LGOP visited Chicago Chapter member Stan Gryga to celebrate his 98th birthday. Stan is glider qualified and served with HHC, 82nd Abn Div from 1942-45, "From Casablanca to Berlin".

All American Membership Change

National has rescinded the All American (Sustaining) Membership, which carried a one-time cost of $350 and then a "maintenance" fee" of 50% of current Annual dues starting in year six.

At this time, the Association has reverted back to the standard life-time "All American" membership at a one-time cost of $350. This, of course, in addition to the ongoing Annual membership.

New CG and DCSM for 82nd Airborne Division

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - With a virtual passing of the colors, Maj. Gen. Christopher T. Donahue and Command Sgt. Maj. David R. Pitt assumed their new positions as the Commanding General and Command Sergeant Major of the 82nd Airborne Division during a change of command and responsibility ceremony June 10, 2020 at Fort Bragg, N.C.

The duo replaced the outgoing command team, Maj. Gen. James Mingus and Command Sgt. Maj. Arthur (Cliff) Burgoyne.

Lt. Gen. Erik Kurilla, commanding general of the XVIII Airborne Corps, presided over the ceremony, conducted without troops due to COVID-19 safety restrictions.

Postcards Are Legit

You may receive a postcard mailer from the Association National office that looks like the photo here. I've received calls and seen quite a few posts asking if this is legit -- it is.

This is another go-around by National to 1) get your updated contact info under the pretext of a "member directory", and 2) raise some funds off the sale of the hard copy book. They did the same thing a few years back.

It doesn't cost anything to submit your contact and service info for inclusion in the book; only purchasing the book costs money, and that's optional. Just know that last time the book took quite a bit longer than expected to complete.

New 82nd CG Announced

MG James Mingus, current Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division, has served in that capacity since August 2018. DOD recently announced that MG Mingus will hand over the Division colors to MG Christopher Donahue at a date TBA.

MG Donahue is currently serving as Combined Joint Special Operations TF-Afghanistan.

Very happy to announce the recipient of our 2020 John E. Hughes Chicago Chapter, 82nd Airborne Division Assn All-Airborne Scholarship: Cadet Nicholas Elish of Loyola University!

Cadet Elish is a Criminal Justice & Criminology major who just completed his Junior year at Loyola with a GPA of 3.75. During his Junior year, he held the rank of Cadet CSM and was very active in the battalion. He completed Basic Airborne Training at Fort Benning in August 2019.

The award included a cash scholarship and an Iron Mike. Please join me in congratulating Cadet Elish! We believe that Cadet Elish will make a excellent Army officer and represent our Airborne community All The Way.

Thank to all Chicago Chapter members who voted, we look forward to continuing our scholarship program in 2021 -- AATW!

75th Anniversary of V-E Day

Victory in Europe Day (AKA V-E Day, VE Day)

On 08 May 1945, the Allies in Europe accepted an unconditional surrender by Nazi Germany. At this time, much of the 82nd Airborne was busy securing the area around Cologne, and would then move into Berlin following the surrender for occupation duty.

325th GIR Veteran Celebrates 105th Birthday!

2020 Association Convention Cancelled

Not surprisingly but highly unfortunately, National has announced that the 2020 Convention that was to be held this August in Houston, TX, has been cancelled due to implications of the pandemic. Below is the formal announcement.

CANCELLATION OF 2020 CONVENTION IN HOUSTON, TX

Fellow Members,

Last night the Board of Directors made one of the toughest decisions since I have been Executive Director and voted to cancel the 2020 Convention. It was not a decision that was made easily or lightly. We looked at many aspects for and against, but as was the case with the All American Week cancellation, it came down to what is best for the health and well-being of the Members of the Association.

Also of concern was the projected low attendance of the convention, as shown by the low number of registration and our concern that it may cause a large financial loss to the host Chapter if there was a small attendance number. By looking at the registration numbers currently being extremely low, as compared to past Conventions, we saw attendance as being very low. We believe this to be because of concerns for traveling, meeting in large numbers in small areas, and possibly financial hardships caused by the losses of jobs or slowing of businesses caused by the pandemic.

Anyone who has registered, and there have only been 25 registrations, probably due to the ongoing pandemic, will be contacted in the next few days concerning your refund. The Houston, TX Chapter will still be the host for the 2021 Convention, and all functions that were to be held this year will be moved to 2021. We do understand that many of our Members are as saddened by this cancellation as we are, but I am sure that you can understand our concerns and reasoning for the cancellation.

We will keep you informed of any additional changes within the Association and look forward to when we can again resume normal operation. Thank you for all you do for the Association and we ask that you please stay safe, follow all posted requirements of your local authorities, and stay healthy. Airborne, All The Way!

First Online Meeting - Thumbs Up

Well that was pretty cool! Yesterday we held our April chapter meeting online via Google Hangouts. Overall, it was a success.

We stuck to a relatively normal agenda, enhanced some high-speed video, and enjoyed the company of some local and some remote members: Lawrence Slavicek, Brian O'Sullivan, Thomas J. Carter, Barney Janecki, Stephen J Corcoran, Jake Goldstein, Jerry O'Meara, and Colin Gray.

We'll likely need to host our May meeting online also, so hope that even more members will join us. And we'd like to host an online meeting at least a few times each year going forward so we can keep in contact with our remote members.

Chicago Chapter:

First and foremost, I hope this note find you and yours healthy and doing your best to adapt to our challenging times. It's our nature to operate in small groups and fight the good fight.

Given the circumstances we've recently become familiar with, our April and May meetings, minimally, are going to be effected with the indefinite closing of our meeting locations. We're looking into the possibility of hosting these next couple of meetings via teleconference or webconference, and I'll follow up with you asap about that.

In the meantime, stay safe and stay healthy. Please let us know if anyone in our Airborne family is afflicted by COVID-19. Our thoughts and prayers are with our members, family and friends to get through this pandemic and put it in our review mirrors. Until then, please ensure you have a sufficient supply of hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes and toilet paper.

Congrats, Cadet Luke Jokerst!

Cadet Luke Jokerst of the local ROTC Rambler Battalion is the recipient of our first annual John E. Hughes Chicago Chapter 82nd Airborne Division Association All-Airborne Scholarship. The scholarship includes a $1,000 cash award, a one-year Annual membership in the Association, and an Iron Mike statue.

Cadet Jokerst is currently a senior at Northwestern University double-majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Psychology. He has a stellar 3.7 GPA and intends to continue both his educational at grad school and his military career as an Engineering Officer. Cadat Jokerst is Airborne-qualified.

About the Scholarship:
The John E. Hughes Chicago Chapter – 82nd Airborne Division Association All-Airborne Scholarship recognizes annually one Airborne-qualified ROTC student for their military service and future contribution to our American society with a cash award to help them towards their goals.

About John E. Hughes:
John E. Hughes is a highly successful businessman and philanthropist, and also a proud military veteran. John served with the 13th and 82nd Airborne Divisions toward the end of World War II, qualifying as a Parachutist and Ranger-Pathfinder.

Over the decades, John has accomplished a great many things both personally and professionally, and exemplifies The Greatest Generation. Additionally, he has demonstrated extraordinary generosity to both our Chicago Chapter and the greater Airborne community. This scholarship is named after John in recognition of our sincere gratitude for all he has contributed as a patriotic American and a great example for all of us.

2019 Scholarship

Happy to announce that our Chicago Chapter is continuing our annual scholarship program that launched last year by Chairman Larry Slavicek. This year, we've approved a $1,000 cash scholarship that will be awarded to one Airborne-qualified Chicagoland ROTC cadet, plus a one year membership in the Assn. Information and applications have been disseminated to more than a dozen area participating colleges. Completed applications are due back next month and then arrangements will be made for the presentation. Publicity to follow.

Beginning this year, we've named our scholarship the John E. Hughes Chicago Chapter 82nd Airborne Division Association All-Airborne Scholarship. Yes, it's a long title but deservedly so. Our goal is to recognize John's extraordinary generosity to our chapter and the greater Airborne community over the years. John is a Life Member of Assn, a WWII veteran, both parachute and glider qualified, and served with both the 13th and 82nd Airborne Divisions (513th PIR and 504th PIR, respectively). He as been a successful businessman and also a dedicated philanthropist.

Our annual scholarship is named for Chicago Chapter Life Member John Hughes.

The 82nd welcomes back Airborne Armor

Recently, the 82nd Airborne Division reactivated Alpha Company, 4th Battalion, 68th Armored Regiment at Fort Bragg to bring additional firepower to the All Americans. The unit will deploy USMC LAV-25A2's, armed with a 25mm gun.

4-68 Armor was part of the 82nd Airborne Division from 1968-1984, when it transitioned to the 3/73 Armor and deployed the M551 Sheridan. 3/73 was deactivated in 1997.

82nd Education Fund Scholarships - Apps due 15 Oct

Just a friendly reminder that applications for 82nd Airborne Assn Scholarships are due to National by 15 October.

The Scholarship grant is available to Former Troopers (with no more than 2 enlistments, within 2 years of their separation date) and dependent children of Veterans and Active Duty Association LIFE members in good standing. Spouses are not eligible. Please also note that the applicant must be intent on pursuing a baccalaureate degree (those pursuing a Masters or higher degree are not eligible), and must gain at least 12 semester hours per semester toward that degree.

The completed application must be POSTMARKED at the address listed on the application no later than 5:00 pm Eastern Time on October 15th to be considered for the scholarship.

Chicago Veterans Ball

The Chicago Veterans organization is holding their 4th Annual Ball on Saturday November 3, 2018 at the Chateau Del Mar, located at 8301 95th St, Hickory Hills, IL 60457, commencing at 6:30 PM. Chapter member Tom Carter has attended this event previously and reports it as a very good dinner with a great group of veterans.

All-American Week celebrates all things Airborne at the Home of the Airborne, Fort Bragg. This year's festivities will be held 21-24 May and will be as action-packed as ever.

Visit the Association website for all the details and schedules. Registration is $100 per person and can be done online or via mail.

Our chapter delegates are still being determined, however all chapter members are encouraged to attend. Please let us know if you plan to go, so we can plan to meet up.

Job Openings at Hines VA Hospital!

Chicago Chapter Life Member Michael Posey is the Chief Supply Chain Officer at Hines VA Hospital in Hines, IL. He looking to hire Veterans in Chicago area with a supply chain background.

Open positions include logisticians and supply technicians at all levels: GS 05, 06, 07, 09, an 11 and a 13. He has direct hire authority for veterans, particularly with campaign medals and disability ratings, and is hopeful to hire Airborne veterans in particular.

DoD to Open Online Exchange Shopping to Veterans - reported by DoD News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13, 2017 — The Defense Department announced today that veterans will soon be able to shop online at military exchanges.

The policy change will extend limited online military exchange shopping privileges to all honorably discharged veterans of the military, DoD officials said in a news release.

The shopping benefit will be effective this Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2017.

While shopping privileges exclude the purchase of uniforms, alcohol and tobacco products, it includes the Exchange Services’ dynamic online retail environment known so well to service members and their families, the release said. The change follows careful analysis, coordination and strong public support, officials said in the release.

“We are excited to provide these benefits to honorably discharged veterans to recognize their service and welcome them home to their military family,” said Peter Levine, performing the duties for the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.

“In addition, this initiative represents a low-risk, low-cost opportunity to help fund morale, welfare and recreation programs in support of service members’ and their families’ quality of life. And it’s just the right thing to do,” Levine added.

The online benefit will also strengthen the exchanges’ online businesses to better serve current patrons. Inclusion of honorably discharged veterans would conservatively double the exchanges’ online presence, according to DoD officials, thereby improving the experience for all patrons through improved vendor terms, more competitive merchandise assortments and improved efficiencies.

“As a nation, we are grateful for the contributions of our service members,” Levine said. “Offering this lifetime online benefit is one small, tangible way the nation can say, ‘Thank you’ to those who served with honor.
